The Amazonia Harvest Foundation is a Philanthropic Nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life of underprivileged populations of Amazonia through focused sustainable harvest and micro-business initiatives that help create jobs and protect the Amazon Rainforest.
The Challenge... One of the most remarkable attributes of Amazonia is its social diversity - the result of the region's complex history of foreign occupation, settlement and social displacement. The world is becoming increasingly aware that Amazonia is not only a land privileged with rich biological diversity but is also a land of great social diversity. Few, however, actually acknowledge that this untamed yet fragile rain forest is also home to traditional populations that have developed ways to live harmoniously within the rain forest and rely on the special characteristics of this Eco-system for sustenance and shelter without depleting its natural resources. Throughout Amazonia’s history, these traditional populations have become the least favored socially and economically. Caught in a crisis beyond their control without proper education or opportunities for income, these populations give way to the forces of unsustainable practices of capitalist industries such as cattle and timber. Our story... It began decades ago when our parents embarked on their journey of a lifetime. Along with a small group of other missionary families, they lived aboard a modest house boat with minimal comforts for themselves and their young family. The group endured numerous challenges as they navigated the river waters that crisscross the Amazon Rainforest, locating and responding to the needs of remote communities along the river’s edge to bring them humanitarian aid and share with them the faith that brought them there.
